Dana Gould

Members of the Dayton United Methodist Church in Dayton, Pennsylvania annually travel to the Dominican Republic. Here they minister and build homes and churches for the poor populace.  These homes are unbelievable to the American way of living. The homes replaced often feature corrugated tin for walls and roof. Tin with many holes are the norm. Light and rain easily pass through them.

To see their annual videos of their efforts type in or click here: www.godtube.com .Once at that site type in “superparakletos”. Then look and click on Dominican Republic Mission trips. The scenes are very moving. You should be thankful we live in America!!!

This evening, a fund-rasing event was had to help raise cash for the 2012 trip.  The group features music, a turkey hunting seminar; gospel presentation; free spaghetti meal; drawings for door prizes and fellowship.

Shawn Kotchey

Shawn Kotchey (www.millcreekvalleygamecalls.com) presented the turkey hunting and call seminar. As always, Shawn supplies a wealth of information to the turkey hunters of the group.  To see his assortment of hunting supplies and calls visit his website .

The Allegheny River

I spent over three hours painting on the “Wheatfield” painting and decided to get outside for a walk. Laurie stated she would like to go too. Of course, she didn’t wish to walk on wooded and hill conditions. She suggested to walk along the Rails To trails north of Kittanning, Pennsylvania. I told her to dress warmly since the air is always moving near the river, meaning wind chill in the twenty degree temperature.

Song Sparrow

As suspected the air had a wintry chill. We traveled about 1 1/2 miles before she sucumbed to the cold air. Along the river wildlife was scarce. We did see some chickadees and several song sparrows. The chickadees were busy working a hollow tree planning their brood. The song sparrow announced its presence with a beautiful song, but locating him was difficult. Those birds love brush and thick areas.

Several sycamore trees were loaded with their 2 inch seed pods. The ball-like seed podslooked much like Christmas ornaments

Chickadee

I find walking without my Springer Spanial to be sad since her age and diabetes have slowed her done. She couldn’t have done a long walk easily. She becomes tired. I had her out last week for about one mile total and she did well. I wouldn’t want to push her much more.

Anyway, Laurie and I had a nice, bit breif walk.

Welcoming Bob

Friday evening, February 11, 2011 the Alamos Squares at the Frogtown Wildlife Club hosted a surprise coming home party for one of their own.

Bob & Mary Bemben

Quiet moments

Bob Bemben  had left for duty and missed the birth of his latest granddaughter. He sat for quite some time holding his precious little bundle…obviously quite happy to be home with her!

Bob upon taking the mic expressed his gratitude to all and especially to AMERICA. He spoke openly about the subject. Bob stated to not believe what you hear on much of the media shows. AMERICA, by far, is the best country in the world and we should never take this country for granted!!!  Words well said!

Bob's family

Denny Steiner

Throughout the evening , up to five squares, went through the motions of “western square dancing”. Local caller extraordinaire, Denny Steiner performed the calling during the festivities.  Sometime I am going to take him aside and “learn” him to call “more gooder”!

Eats and desserts were in abundance too. Homemade dishes and cakes!   Ummmm-Ummm- good!

EATS!!!

Swing her!

We are all so happy to have Bob back on America’s soil and I know he feels the same. WE are proud of his accomplishments and yearn for a time when “war will be no more.”  Thank you Bob!

Hike-Civil War

I made a short hike this morning along Red Mill Creek Road. While walking back towards my vehicle I noticed the sound of water in an unnatural way.  I paused to gaze in the direction of the sound when a 5-point buck emerged. He was walking  directly down the middle of the small stream. I watched him for 150 feet or so before he looked up and caught me in a movement.  He was within 30 yards  for most of my sighting of him. Unfortunately, I didn’t have my camera with me.

Later in the day I had the opportunity to spend some time with my friend, Robert “Slim” Bowser. Slim is a Civil War reenactor. I took some photos for a possible future painting.  You can search his blogs by checking on the right side of blog page. Slim is a dedicated Civil War historian taking very seriously the sacrifices of the great men of honor in times past. He represents a soldier of the 62nd PA Volunteers, Company D. This unit was recruited in 1861 in Armstrong County, Pa.

Biking

My "Harley-Honda"

I enjoy riding bikes. The only negative aspect for me is  after peddling along the trails for a time I have some discomfort on the back side, if you know what I mean. (Proper attire would aid with this discomfort, but I don’t feel very beautiful in spandex.)

I often take time to ride between Kittanning and Rosston and back. The round trip is approximately 10 miles I have been told. The pluses are the ability to see friends and stop and chat with and to view the beautiful Allegheny River with the floral and wildlife that abounds along those waters. Also, I get some exercise. That can’t be a bad thing.

Fort Armstrong was near Fort Run (Manorville)

Foggy Morn at Rosston

I occasionally bike on the Freeport Trail and north of Kittanning too. I would like to visit the trail at Emlenton soon. I hear the beauty is awesome along the river and a tunnel is present. I don’t know why going there is such a problem for me. Retired people have so many things on their agenda ya know!
