The original sketch I had made some years ago featured a colonial eastern hunter and his son with turkeys coming in behind. However, once I decided to paint the concept in my mind quickly went to doing some Pennsylvania Elk. The longhunter, being right-handed, was in a dilemma. The elk had come up from behind and his left without his knowledge. Now he is faced as to how to get turned around and get a shot without spooking the herd. Will he succeed?

Eagles nest early. I visited a known nest in February and the eagle was already setting on the eggs. The next day the snow was falling. That inspiration is what lead to this painting concept.

One of my favorite time to hunt deer with my flintlock is during snowstorms. The beauty is absolutely breathtaking. The challenges of keeping the flintlock dry is well with the experience. This painting depicts three deer much as they would appear in such conditions.

The Great Blue Heron has always captivated my interests. I can identify their flights in a second because of the way they pull their head, and neck in and extend their legs. I know of a local rookery that averages 15 to 18 nests each year.

The painting “The Pines” was inspired while hunting for “bucks” with my flintlock, “Old Jacob.” A big-racked buck was about 25 yards from me among many pine limbs. I wasn’t sure enough of the points, so I didn’t take a shot. Armstrong County, Pennsylvania, had a “four-point to one side” regulation.

The painting titled “Laurel Flush” shows a flock of turkeys flushing from among the mountain laurel blossoms: Pennsylvania’s state flower. I wonder what startled them? The original concept featured another six inches of length and a coyote well-hid among the laurels.
