I waited for the gobbler that I had heard the last two mornings. At 5:35, I heard a gobbler across the hollow where I had been the previous two mornings. I hurried to a pre-determined site and very quietly set up. I was about 50 to 60 yards from his roosting site. After I had set up a tom exploded his presence where I had just came from…. turkeys!
At fly down the gobbler flew across a small gully and landed on the opposite bench. He was silent. I waited a short time and clucked and purred and he answered one time to my extreme left. The gobbler had went across the right-of-way I had hoped he would have flown down to, but, he was 80 yards above me. I adjusted my position and never heard from him again. He was above me on a steep bench and a small stream between us. I hope he didn’t see me.
The driveway contractor told me he was going to start today on my driveway. With that in mind I quit the hunt at 7:00. I gobbled three times and the one across the hollow shocked gobble to me. I found it tough to leave the woods.
The contractor didn’t show up at the house until around 3:15. I didn’t see him, but, a load of material was dumped on the drive. I guess they will be here tomorrow to begin their work. I am planning on going hunting for a while anyway. My step father, Bob is going to go out hunting too. We have a set up plan. Of course, I wouldn’t be surprised if, tomorrow, that gobbler was somewhere far off in a distant land courting the hens with his beautiful music!
