I told myself there would be three things I knew would happen this morning. One was a prediction that no birds would be around me today. Another thought was that I would not go across the creek after that bird today! The last one was , if I went after a far off bird he would be done gobbling when I arrived.
No gobbling at the usual site. One prediction down. This is only the second time no gobbling was present. I did hear the same bird across the creek again. The second one was a failure for after the turkey continued gobbling at 6:15, I made a dash to get in his area. Number two failed for I did what I said I wouldn’t do!
When I arrived in the area where the bird was gobbling I was greeted with silence.. Two out of three!!! I am beginning to lose confidence with myself. ( I may need to hang on to some of the feathers I find in the woods like the one in the photo.) The next couple of hunting days may need to be postponed due to the shots of insulin for Susie. Laurie should be back on Monday. I may get out later in the day. Next week looks very warm with highs in the 80 degree range.
I left the woods by 7:15 since the driveway contractor would be home to do the cement work.
Susie got past a barrier in my garage today and wandered out across the newly poured cement! Luckily for me the workers fixed the paw prints before the cement set.
Other sightings of the day were one deer and one squirrel. Also, I found a deer antler shed today.
A couple more great photos! I bagged my jake because I found 5 breast feathers on a sandy tram road and I could tell they were fresh. A short set of yelps from my beechwood Top Call boxcall got an immediate answer and three jakes showed up in just a couple of minutes. Fresh feathers trump fresh tracks any day. Ryan just called to say he has real estate work to do tomorrow and won’t be up to hunt. With the weather forecast of heavy rain in the morning… I’m a bit relieved that I can sleep in and stay dry. I saw hens several places today as I travelled to the cottage and back. I think the birds and the deer are sensing the approaching storm. I always feel a bit of excitement when I pick up a shed antler. I never stop looking for them when I am in the woods and yet I can count on one hand the few that have revealed themselves to me over the years. They are another gift from God from His outdoor treasury. Don’t get discourage… focus on how great it is going to feel to have your determination pay off in the end. Oh… for you non-hunters… you can tell fresh feathers by the perky, dry fluff at the base of the shaft. It draws damp, sags, and gets clumpy as it reacts to the moisture it is exposed to. Dana
Larry, could it be possible that we attract what we think?
Just a thought, instead of inviting less than disireable results with expectations of such. Try to visualize that tom cooperating from the first gobble to the dinner table.
There is a whole week left and should be some lonesome toms’ on the prowl in the low grass or planted crops each morning this week.
Saw a tom strutting from 11 am till at least 330 pm yesterday even with all the rain. It’s far from over.
While set up with a friend yesterday I heard something beside me, slowly I turned to see a pint sized woodchuck headed my way. I waited till it was almost on my leg till I reached down and picked him up by the tail and sent him the other direction. Man was he surprised!!
Kip,
You are correct with attracting what one thinks. I need to work on that confidence building. I think we all, probably, go through spells where our confidence dwindles. Thanks…..
Watch those ‘hogs for they can lay one on you!!
